Focal of France has decided to get into the headphone business, and have created an amazing set of headphones called the Spirit One that our own Teri got a chance to audition at last fall’s Rocky Mountain AudioFest. She was impressed enough to add them to our growing collection of headphones. They are in now, with a price around $299. They are a closed ear style, with a comfortable fit. Forget about those cheap Big Box USB turntables for ripping your vinyl…. If you already have a decent turntable, then look no further than the new Rega Fono Mini. It’s a great little phono preamplifier AND has a USB connection with an ADC that can convert your vinyl to computer format at standard 16/44 CD resolution. At $175, it’s a quick way to get your old vinyl into your computer and have an outboard phono stage that is a great little performer for the price! Many audio folks out there have been skeptical over the years about ‘switching amps’ or ‘class D’ type amps. Times have changed. We’ve now heard several very good switching amps, including the Devialet integrated unit we had a loan for awhile. But one of our favorite new Integrated amplifiers is the Audio Research DSi200. When Audio Research does something, they do it right. They always focus on the music. If you haven’t had a chance to hear our production ARC DSi200, it’s time to give it a listen! (We had a pre-prodution unit on loan last year for a month). The character of this Integrated is extremely natural, neutral, fast, and powerful. We’ve now broken in a lot of our new speaker lines with it (Nola, Harbeth, etc.) and we are continually impressed with what this Integrated does with each and every speaker. Review here. If you are in the market for an easy to live with, energy efficient, and extremely natural and musical Integrated (and yet incredibly detailed with a holographic soundstage), then you HAVE to give the DSi200 a listen. When Pioneer exited the High-end TV market, they left a huge void. Sure, prices we’re coming down and some aspects to the TVs out there were getting better, but none had those rich inky blacks that the Elite Kuros had.
